In theoretical physics, a membrane, brane, or p-brane is a spatially extended, mathematical concept that appears in string theory and its relatives (M-theory and brane cosmology). The central idea is that a visible, n-dimensional universe is restricted to a membrane (or brane) inside a higher-dimensional space, called "the bulk". Multiple branes may be moving through this bulk.
